brittlestar @ punggol - July 2011

This 2+2+1 armed bottlebrush brittlestar was quickly moving along the shore. It seemed responsive to light and was generally moving away from the light despite it not having eyes. It must have some other way of detecting the light. Three of it's arms were noticeably shorter than the other two and the brittlestar probably was on the giving end of a meal session of a fish or an octopus. The shorter arms were in a state of regrowth. Amazing for such a tiny animal. Despite this, it showed very little if any signs of being at a disadvantage.

burgundy anemones @ Punggol 01July2011

Here's a clip of a few burgundy anemones (Bunodosoma goanensis) at Punggol.

These anemones were localised around a few specific boulders a little further along the shore. Sporting a deep dark burgundy colour, the average diameter (from tentacle tip-to-tip) was about 6 cm. There were about 20 anemones visible on the boulders in the group. Strangely, we did not see these anemones further along the shore.

painting doubles @ SBWR 26June2011

Tham Pui San was having a painting class at SBWR at the main hide and two of the participants were a pair of twins about 3 (or 4) years old. They were merrily mixing paints like pros and dabbing their art paper, creating swirls and slowly forming their interpretation of the scene before them.

Value of their art? Priceless!

otters @ Chek Jawa 03July2011

(Apologies for the shaky video!. Shot from a distance of about 200metres away.)

Some of the Seagrassing team spotted three large otters at Chek Jawa this morning. These are presumably Smooth-Coated Otters (based on the large size of these animals). They were running along the shore during a low tide from near the elevated boardwalk at the start of the mangroves towards the Northern part of the shore. The otters eventually 'disappeared' around the rear of Chek Jawa towards Johor. The video shows two of the otters trotting along the Northern shore.
